 |
The Aikido Student Handbook
This popular Aikido primer is both nationally and internationally acclaimed and is used by Aikido dojos to introduce their new students to Aikido, the Aikido dojo, Aikido etiquette, etc. The Aikido Student Handbook also gives both beginner and advanced aikido practitioners both references and tips on Aikido training.

The Elements of Aikido
The Elements of Aikido is described by Aikido Today Magazine as "meatier" than The Aikido Student Handbook. It addresses a wider range of topics important to both beginners and experienced Aikido practitioners such as tips on centering to enabling intuition. Although it is not a "how to do specific technique" book it does include simple line drawings to show some of Aikido's basic techniques.
The Elements of Aikido is currently out of print but may still be found through online book suppliers such as Amazon and/or Barnes and Noble. |

Review by Susan Perry, Aikido Today Magazine
Greg O'Connor, who authored the Aikido Student Handbook, has written a more serious, meatier book: The Elements of Aikido. Although this is not a philosophy book per se, it does strive to communicate O Sensei's message to beginners.
Some of what one finds here is common to most Aikido books for beginners. There is, for instance, a glossary and a list of tips for finding a good dojo. But the book also covers deeper, often neglected topics - such as Aikido's ethics, its reliance on grounding and intuition, and its emphasis on warrior values including courage, compassion, and leadership. The longest chapter, titled The Practice of Aikido includes sections on important topics for new students: blending, ukemi, basic stances, Aikido weapons, multiple attacks, and basic technique.
O'Connor, who has founded many new dojos, has no doubt refined this material as he presented it to one group of beginners after another. With the publication of this very good primer, Aikido students everywhere can be the beneficiaries of that work. |

We have now combined our popular Bokken Parts 1 and 2 into one excellent reference video. This video captures a special one-day bokken workshop presented at the ACNJ Morristown dojo by Sensei Greg O'Connor. This video was privately shot by ACNJ students who requested, due to the wealth of reference content, that Sensei O'Connor make it available to other students.
Bokken: Part 1 concentrates on the basics of bokken training, suburi and the use of the body and includes questions and answers.
Bokken: Part 2 covers further bokken basics, basic movement drills of shihogiri and happogiri and basic partner drills.
