About Aikido Centers of New Jersey

At Aikido Centers of New Jersey we teach traditional Aikido as handed down by Aikido's founder, Morihei Ueshiba, emphasizing Aikido philosophy and ethics along with Aikido's full range of capabilities from passive gentle persuasion to full street effectiveness.

Aikido Centers of New Jersey is an independent organization of traditional aikido dojos throughout central and northern New Jersey under the direction of our chief instructor and founder, Sensei Greg O'Connor. Sensei O'Connor began his training in traditional Japanese martial arts in 1972 with Japanese/Okinawan karate before moving onto Aikido in 1978. Sensei O'Connor has been a full-time professional Aikido teacher since 1987, devoting all his efforts to the instruction and advancement of Aikido. He is currently ranked as 6th dan (6th degree black belt) with Aikido World Headquarters (Aikido Hombu Dojo, Tokyo).

Aikido Centers of New Jersey is the largest traditional Aikido dojo organization in the state. We currently have traditional Aikido dojos in East Hanover (formerly in Morristown), Clifton, Newton, Manasquan, Hillsborough and Summit (formerly in Plainfield). ACNJ members can train in every ACNJ class at every ACNJ dojo whenever they like - there's no additional charge. Click here for Google map locations

Come visit us -
We hope that you will come down to visit our Aikido dojo and watch our classes. There are many things to look for when observing an Aikido class. The most important, we think, is that although our practice is serious, you'll notice there is a relaxed, friendly atmosphere on the mat. Smiling, having fun and enjoying class is encouraged. Because the throws and pins we perform are potentially dangerous we must take care of each other. You will see seniors practicing in a very dynamic manner with each other-flying this way and that - while beginners in the same class are being gently guided by their own senior. Aikido seniors enjoy helping new students learn in a safe atmosphere while still being able to train harder with the more experienced. By adapting the techniques being taught to the beginner's comfort level they not only improve their own Aikido but they help the new student to have a positive and enjoyable experience-and they make a new friend! You will notice that in Aikido we do not have colored belts (children excepted). There are, however, five white belt ranks below Black Belt called kyu ranks. Here at ACNJ the traditional large pleated dark skirt of Aikido (called a hakama) is worn by students who have achieved the rank of 3rd kyu. Testing is not mandatory but for those interested it is conducted every four months. After watching class you are more than welcome to speak with the instructor or any of the students. We will be happy to answer all of your questions. Our curriculum also includes...

  • Multiple attacks
  • Bokken and Jo training
  • Weapons disarming
  • Silent classes
  • Candlelight classes
  • Special seminars and workshops
  • Iaido
  • Meditation periods
  • Open discussions and much more
