Besides its beautiful and dynamic techniques, Aikido is known for its beautiful rolls, falls and dramatic high falls and break falls. Learning how to fall safely is one of the first valuable skills you will be taught in any of our Aikido Dojos. Safety is paramount and we teach all types of falls using safe low impact methods. We actually don’t look at it as “falling” but as “recovery”.
Of course, learning how to fall safely is an extremely valuable skill—at any age and especially as we age. But falling is actually not required in any of our classes. Members can enjoy any of our Aikido classes without taking any falls. Participants can still practice and enjoy the valuable aspects of Aikido training that concentrate on centering, posture, breathing as well as partner blending, controlling and neutralizing techniques. And each Aikido technique, as O’Connor Sensei teaches it, can be applied as a “come-along” and as such can be effectively applied in security and law enforcement.
If you are apprehensive about leaning how to safely fall or if you have a physical concern just bring it to the instructor’s attention and your Aikido practice will be adjusted appropriately. If, at some point, you wish to take a look at and maybe learn how to safely fall and recover comfortably then a low impact introduction to basic falling methods is done with complete safety in mind and at your own personal pace and comfort level.
